One of the difficulties we face when choosing to stay or go, is the beliefs we have about being perceived as “admirable” for staying, or “disloyal” for leaving.

“We give character traits and morality to particular movements,” Emily said.

“’Stayers’ are often praised, and ‘leavers’ or ‘quitters’ are maybe criticised.

“When we attach morality or character to a particular choice, it does cloud our ability to make a different choice in the future.

“Sometimes it is really faithful to stay – that’s a beautiful thing to do – and also, there can be faithfulness in leaving, in recognising that my time here has come to an end.”
