Infidelity can detonate a relationship – but there is hope! Relationship expert and neuropsychotherapist Joanne Wilson says that while infidelity has a disastrous impact, relationships can and do recover.

The Salt 106.5 Careline is here to listen, care and pray. Call any day of the week, 9am-11pm on 5400 2754.

When it comes to infidelity, the golden question is this: why do people cheat?

Joanne puts it down to three main factors:

1. Stress

“Infidelity is a misguided attempt to cope with the stress of life,” she says. “It can manifest in someone looking outward for a repeated hit of dopamine.” We’re all familiar with the relentless nature of stress and unfortunately, sometimes it can manifest in someone looking outwards in an attempt to escape the daily pressures of life.

2. Insecurity

When you’re feeling valued by fresh, adoring eyes, and it’s booting your self worth, it can be dangerous. “If you’re not feeling secure in yourself, you may end up seeking affirmation or validation from someone else outside your relationship.”

3. Dissatisfaction

Joanne says that while “dissatisfaction can breed temptation,” it’s important that this is addressed with a partner, instead of opting for “the thrill of secret liaison.”

If you or someone you love is experiencing the devastating consequences of infidelity, there is hope. Relationships can and do recover from infidelity and while it takes some work, Joanne says a couple can prayerfully repair their relationship with the guidance of an expert or practictioner. “In counselling rooms, people are choosing to repair and gain trust in their relationships again,” Joanne says.
