Board member, volunteer announcer and dear friend Richard Daniel passed away after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 65.

Salt 106.5 CEO Phillip Randall joined Steve D to pay tribute to Richard and his contribution to Christian media.

“An amazing man, he went home to be with his Lord, absolutely peaceful that whatever happened, God was in control,” Phillip said.

“Richard has been part of the ministry here at Salt for many years, and he’s absolutely going to be missed.”

Having worked closely with Richard for many years, Steve says he will miss seeing Richard’s smile around the studio.

“It’s been great having Richard, not only as a director of Salt on the board but also as a volunteer announcer,” he said.

“Seeing his smiling face, coming to the studios every week as he does things like weekend shifts.”

Always happy to help out, Richard was known to cover shifts if another announcer was unwell with just a quick phone call, “Richard was always there to stand up and say, ‘yes I’m happy to step in’ at a moment’s notice”.

Richard was involved with radio for 47 years, along with his brothers Glenn and Terry who are well known in Australian independent radio circles.

While Glenn passed away in 2021, Terry shared the sad news earlier this week on Facebook:

Richard was involved with radio for 47 years, along with his brothers Glenn and Terry who are well known in Australian independent radio circles.

“It is with a sad but relieved heart that I share the news that my brother Richard passed away at 1:44am this morning in Nambour Selangor Hospital.

This all started back in 2021 with a melanoma on the back of his leg – in the last 6 to 8 months that moved to brain cancers and tumours and in the last 2 weeks they found 3 inoperable tumours deep in his brain.

Lesson here for all of us – if you suspect a spot or skin anomaly please get it checked.

Lots of plans to be made in the next few days – we will keep you all updated and thanks in advance for your thoughts and prayers.

We know Richard is with God and at peace.

He’s probably playing cricket already with my brother Glenn!”

Phillip says the thing that stood out for him, was Richard’s passion for media, and particularly Christian media.

“His love for the media could be seen in what he did across his career in commercial media but also in Christian media,” he said.

“It was great to be able to learn from him, his vast experience in media, and to have somebody of his great calibre and talent available to salt 106.5,” Steve said.

Richard was heavily involved with Salt 106.5 as well as Christian Vision, where he served since 2002. He saw the value of the media, as a vessel to carry the message of hope and the love of God to the community.

“I’ve known Richard for probably about two decades now, and one of the most amazing people that I had met in media generally in Christian media,” Phillip said.

As a member of the Salt 106.5 board, Richard was a valuable contributor at every meeting.

“It was great to be able to learn from him, his vast experience in media, and to have somebody of his great calibre and talent available to salt 106.5,” Steve said.

Please pray for Richard’s wife Julie, his children Melissa and Matt and their children, as they come to terms with their loss.
